Farm equipment is a big investment and keeping it in top shape is essential—especially in Mississippi, where unpredictable weather can take a toll on our machinery. A regular maintenance schedule and our at-home maintenance tips will help to prevent costly breakdowns and keep your machine running in top shape.

1. Check and Change Fluids Regularly

Oils, coolants, and hydraulic fluids should be checked frequently, especially during seasons of frequent operation. Working in high-heat conditions can cause fluids to break down faster, leading to engine failure.

2. Keep Air Filters Clean

Dusty and high-pollen working conditions can quickly clog air filters, reducing engine efficiency and potentially leading to overheating. Regularly inspect and replace filters to keep your engine running as smoothly as possible.

3. Inspect Tires or Tracks

Tire pressure can fluctuate with changes in temperature. To prevent unnecessary wear, regularly check that your tires are inflated to their recommended pressure. On tracked equipment, regularly check for proper tension and alignment to avoid uneven wear.

4. Grease Moving Parts

Lubrication reduces friction and will help to extend the life of your equipment’s joints, bearings, and other moving parts. In our humid conditions, it will also help prevent rust and corrosion.

5. Protect Your Equipment from the Elements

When possible, store your machinery in covered, climate-controlled areas like barns, garages, etc. Unnecessary exposure to rain, humidity, sun, and extreme temperatures will degrade rubber components, lead to rust, and possible engine failure. If you don’t have access to covered and climate-controlled storage areas, use protective tarps.

6. Perform Pre- and Post-Season Inspections

Before planting and harvesting seasons, thoroughly inspect and service your equipment. At the end of the season, clean, repair, and store it properly to ensure it’s ready for next season. Reach out to the service department at WADE, Inc. to make a maintenance plan today!

7. Stay Ahead of Electrical Issues

Tough weather conditions can lead to corroded wires and poor electrical connections. Regularly check battery terminals, wiring harnesses, and all electrical connectors for corrosion, and clean when necessary.

These quick tips are essential in ensuring the long, healthy life of your equipment. When in doubt, perform a visual inspection and make sure that all components are functioning as desired.
